La Flamme
French for “nothing special,” the 105-year-old La Flamme is often so swamped with students that you have to slog through a half-dozen back issues of Car and Driver before getting a cut. If nothing else, it’s cheaper, safer, and generally greater than Great Cuts. Shampoo, cut, and dry for men or women is $19, without shampoo $14. The staff is mostly friendly, though some only ask one question: “What number?” If you guess wrong (they want to know your preferred clipper attachment size), you’ll definitely learn from your mistake. No appointments.
