Getting away from Harvard for a bit is a nice way to clear your mind and appreciate your own backyard—or get really jealous of your high school friends’ newfound happiness and calm. But don’t worry, they’re faking it. Here are some places to check out:
The main campus lies at the end of the Green Line’s B-route. From there, one can catch a shuttle to the Chestnut Hill campus. More experienced riders often opt for the #86 bus (catch it in the Square) instead.
BU lies all along the Green Line’s B-route once the line emerges from the ground after Kenmore. Alternatively, a bike-ride or roller-blade along the other side of the Charles will also get you there in about 10min.
At South Station, hop on either a bus or Amtrak (both roughly $9) for the hour-long (or more during rush-hour) ride to Providence, RI. The campus is a 5min walk away from both stations.
Take I-93 north to I-89 north at Concord, NH. Get off I-89 at exit 18 in Lebanon, NH onto Rte. 120. Bear right off the exit, heading north on Rte. 120 into Hanover. 4.1 miles from the exit, Rte. 120 forks at a traffic light. Turn left at the light, onto East Wheelock St. You will be almost at the Hopkins Center (left) and the Dartmouth Green (right). Dartmouth Coach (800-637-0123; www.dartmouthcoach.com) sends buses from South Station to Hanover for $30 one-way, $45 round-trip. Relish the wilderness and the alcohol.
Spread throughout the Downtown area of Boston, Emerson is best reached from the Boylston T-stop.
The 5 colleges include Amherst, Northampton, UMass, Smith, and Mount Holyoke. Buses to Amherst, MA (1¼hr ride), leave from South Station and the Riverside T-stop.
An urban campus along the Green Line's E-route after the line returns above ground after Copley.
Take the #96 bus from Harvard Square, through Somerville, and into Medford. You can’t miss the Tufts campus on your left. Or take the Redline to Davis Sq.
If driving, head west on the Mass. Pike until you reach I-81. Take I-81 south through Hartford and it will merge with I-95 just as the unpleasantness which is New Haven looms over the horizon. Get off on the first exit after that hideous sports arena and head north (uphill). Cross a bridge and follow the signs to the center of campus. If taking the train or bus, catch one at South Station. Amtrak is $47 one-way, Greyhound is $29. Both depart 6-8 times per day. But who wants to go there, anyway?
The Wellesley shuttle, all but officially known as the “Fuck Truck,” leaves from Johnston Gate. Tickets are available at Out-of-Town News.
