HSA Publications

As Manager, you will be ultimately responsible for all aspects of the production of three books: "The Unofficial Guide to Life at Harvard", The Unofficial Guide to Summer at Harvard, and The Unofficial Guide for Harvard Parents.

Each publication presents its own set of challenges and opportunities. As you know, "The Unofficial Guide to Life at Harvard" is one of the most ubiquitous and influential books on campus. It has been around for over a quarter-century and has a well-established base of readers and advertisers. The Unofficial Guide to Summer at Harvard and The Unofficial Guide for Harvard Parents are both newer publications and can continuosly be revised and improved! As Manager of this agency you will have join the likes of Zagat, Frommer's, Lonely Planet, etc in trying to provide effective content in a world where print publishing is declining. You will learn the concept these guides CEO's are adopting - it's not about the book, it is about the content. We have great content, it's written by brilliant Harvard students!

As Manager at HSA Publications, you will:

  • Write and implement a business plan and a budget
  • Analyze financial statements in order to make decisions about your business
  • Be able to motivate a sales team - sales are tough! With the decline of print advertiser, the new HSA Publications Manager will have to be pro-active in creating other advertising opportunities
  • Structure and launch a marketing strategy to increase revenue
  • Focus on developing and implementing marketing strategies to gain more business from local Harvard clients and others
  • Work closely with another HSA agency, Let's Go Publications to determine content for each book in The Unofficial Series
  • Provide input and be a part of The Unofficial Guide Series move to e-books
  • Update and manage a website
  • Be a part of the changing publishing industry landscape. Think of different ways to utilize the Unofficial Guide content

As Advertising Associate at HSA Publications, you will:

  • Focus on developing and implementing marketing strategies to gain more business from local Harvard clients and others
  • Research advertising strategies and rival publications to better understand our competition
  • Work with the manager to intelligently price advertising options (bundles, deals, coupons, etc) in our publications
  • Work with local and national clients from various industries
  • Create new advertising options and custom packages to fit clients' needs
  • Perfect your persuasion skills and become deal savvy
